Eating unhealthy foods is the biggest roadblock in achieving your fitness goals.  Our food has changed drastically Fast foodover the last 50 years with the introduction of chemicals additives and the concept of fast food. These chemical additives (preservatives) were not present in our food until the 1960’s.  These preservatives and chemical developments produce process foods that have a longer shelf life and are quicker and easier to make.  Why are processed foods bad? Because they contained added salt, sugar, and fat. These foods are made quicker and cheaper, earning money for the seller; however, essentially lack the health and nutrients the buyer may think he/she is getting.

Read Ingredients

I know it is very easy to run in the grocery store, grab some groceries for the week or night, check out, rush home, make a quick meal, and go on with your day as normal. Moreover,  it is even more convenient to go to the drive-through and grab a quick bite to eat. But how do you know exactly what you are eating? Most fast food chains do not list their ingredients right there for you to see. Yes, you can find the ingredients after some digging and I would recommend you do so, just see what ingredients are in their “food”. You may be surprised! On the other hand, the ingredients are on all products in the grocery store.  Take some time and read them! I know this will slow down the shopping process, but you will be aware of exactly what you are putting in your body!

In this NEW FIT LIFESTYLE you will need to know theses answers so you can be educated, attentive, and more apt to stay on track!

Top Unhealthy  Food Ingredients

Artificial Colors:  Are basically added to entice children to want to eat foods that would otherwise look boring. Yellow #5, Blue #1, and Red#4o  are most prominent in a variety of foods. These colorings have been linked to hyperactivity and possibly autism. artificial-colorful-candies

Artificial Sweeteners:  Were introduced in the 1950’s and are in  variety of foods, drinks, and all diet sodas. These fake sugars have been linked to migraines, cancer, and Type -2 Diabetes. These also will actually lead to weight gain and include: Aspertame,  Acesulfame Potassium, Equal, NutraSweet, Saccharin, Splenda, Sorbitol, Suralose, and Sweet ‘N Low.

High Fructose Corn Syrup: This the number 1 ingredient in many foods and drinks, has no nutritional value and is actually 50 times sweeter than sugar! So how can a drink or food be fat free when this is the number one ingredient? That doesn’t make sense to me either!

Partially Hydrogenated Oil: This is basically a man-made process where hydrogen is added to liquid oil to make a solid form and these contain trans fat, which are artificial in nature and not good for our bodies.

Sodium Nitrite and Sodium Nitrate: This is extra salt added to packaged meats, hot dogs, bacon, and other cured meats to prevent them from spoiling. These additives have been linked to an increase risk of cancers. Would you believe high doses of this is used to kill rodents?! And it’s put in our food!

SodaSodium Benzoate: This is also a preservative used in many acidic foods, beverages, and condiments, to prevent spoiling. These include soda’s, jellies, fruit pies, and hot sauce packets. When this is combined with ascorbic acid it can form Benzene and this is also linked to cancers.

Sulphites: This as also a preservative used to prolong shelf life and keep the colors vivid. These have been linked to allergic reactions that differ among individuals.

If you notice, all of the ingredients listed above have a common theme: Man-made preservatives so food does not spoil. The shelf-life is longer, the colors are pretty , but the effects are permanent! We need food to live and feel good, but theses ingredients do the opposite. When these PRESERVATIVE FILLED foods are consumed, our bodies can not even decipher what we just swallowed and what it should do with it!  For this reason, the food gets stored (as a spare tire) for later use.

Our bodies are adaptable and as we have adapted through this life, so has the food. At one point in time,  food was not so readily available. Instead, we had to hunt and kill our own. Storing food for later use then was a great thing our bodies did naturally. However, now our bodies are storing food because OUR BODIES DON’T even UNDERSTAND it is FOOD!

Eliminating these ingredients from your diet will do wonders! You will feel different, much better, and you WILL lose weight! The longer you go with out these salt loaded, preservative filled foods the less you will even think of them…and the MORE WEIGHT you will lose!

Good food vs bad food

  1. This is so true, our diet is so important when it comes to losing weight or maintaining our results. I always say, you cannot out train a bad diet. My problem I sugar, I have a huge sweet tooth. I had no clue that those artificial colors were bad for you though. That is news to me. Thanks for the info!

    • Hey John,

Thank you! A sweet tooth you have, haha well me too, I actually love ice-cream! However, sticking with real sugar will actually be better for you, as suppose to the artificial sugars! When you make the changes and start eating healthy, you can afford to splurge a little every now and then with some sweets! We can’t deprive ourselves from everything we like!

  2. Hey there Elisha, It’s just such a shame that it’s cheaper to eat unhealthy food these days with so many bad additives in the food.
And for someone that has a strict budget, it makes it hard for them to eat healthily.
You can find so many great dishes that are cheap and easy to fix (like in the microwave 🙁 ) It just makes it hard not to buy when you don’t have the money to buy fresh ingredients and fix from scratch. No wonder why we have so many obese people around these days.
    Such a shame,
    Kim

    • Hi Kim,

Yes, I agree with you, eating healthy can be a little more expensive, and that’s why its better to look at it as an investment in your health! Cheap and easy is convenient, and I know money is tight for a lot of people (me included), so just make the best with what you do have! Little differences add up quickly!

      Thank you!

  3. Hello and thanks for sharing, this is a big one for many because many people are hooked on sweets and junk foods they crave them so much that they would not stop until they get them. But the down side too all of this is that these foods no matter how good they taste are not good for our bodies and can do a whole lot of damage this in itself should cause us to stop, think and change our way of eating and drinking. So lets load up on the good foods and avoid those that can cause ham.

  4. I see that you say to avoid artificial sweeteners. Something I like to keep in the house is a pitcher of crystal light lemonade. It helps my family to drink more water throughout the day. They won’t drink water without it. What would you suggest I do instead? I’ve tried putting fruits in it instead but it’s too hard to keep up with.

    • Hi, I am sorry for such a late reply. Well, Crystal Light Lemonade contains aspartame, something that should be avoided. I also agree with you about keeping up with the fruit in water, given it goes bad in just a couple of days.

Stevia is a natural sweetener found in some flavor packets or drops. Sweetleaf is a brand that makes water drop flavorings that contain Stevia. Real sugar is also better than the artificial ones and coconut sugar is another suggestion. Water enhancers and sweeteners are tricky, just because so many artificial sugars are used!

I hope I was some help!
